It is a fact that high blood pressure is one of today’s most common ailments. The combination of a poor diet, lack of exercise, and a busy life have resulted in tens of millions of people all around the world having problems relating to blood pressure. Most people are simply unaware of how the heart functions and what Good Blood Pressure is.

The heart is perhaps the most important organ in the body. It works as a pump feeding a never ending supply of blood to the rest of the body. It will move blood that has low oxygen levels to the lungs to be replenished. This oxygen rich blood is then pumped to every single muscle and cell to use as energy.

In order to maintain Good Blood Pressure you should know that there are two measurements given for blood pressure. The first is referred to as systolic pressure, this is recorded when the heart is pumping blood and beating. The second measurement is called diastolic pressure. This is the value when the heart is not beating and is at rest.

The figure is actually calculated by the pressure that is felt by the artery walls as blood is pushed along. The reading is given as mmHg, or millimetres of mercury. When you are given a set of values it is usually the systolic number which is first or above. For example “110 over 80″ means you have 110mmHg systolic pressure and 80 diastolic.

Most health specialists will define high blood pressure, or hypertension, as a sustained blood pressure reading of above 140/190 mmHg. Though at first there may be no other symptoms of high blood pressure, it is often seen as a high risk factor in regard to developing a cardio-vascular problem.

If you have low blood pressure or Hypotension then you should not be duly concerned. Unless it stays abnormally low for a constant time then it can simply mean you are in good health. Most doctors would say under “90 over 66″ is low blood pressure.

To maintain Good Blood Pressure Try:

Use natural salts

Less processed foods

Remove salt shaker from the table

Exercise at least 20 min/day

Countless people across the world are suffering from high blood pressure, AKA raised blood pressure. But thankfully the issue can be controlled with the help from blood pressure medications. There are several different kinds of blood pressure drugs that will help you handle the issue successfully.

One of the most famous and regularly used medications for treating high blood pressure is Diuretics. The medication works by draining out unnecessary fluids from the body. Diuretics work in the kidney As and when the unwanted toxins, sodium and water from the body. To derive best benefit out of diuretics, it is essential that it should be used in tandem with other medications for high blood pressure.

Many people also use ACE Angiotensin Changing Enzyme inhibitors to treat hypertension. This category of substances obstructs the formation of a hormone known as Angiotensin II. This hormone is responsible to narrow the arteries. Since the narrowing of veins is curbed, it relaxes the blood vessels which later cut back the blood pressure.

Another well known medication to treat blood pressure is Beta raised blood pressure is beneficial as it considerably decreases the nerve impulses that reach out to blood vessels and the heart.blockers in nerve impulses proves useful as it makes the heart beat at a normal pace. As and when the heart beat is regularized, a fall the heart beat. As the heart beat slows the blood pressure happens. This medication therefore helps to combat This instantly decreases rising blood pressure.

Alpha blockers are also an effective medication category that work fine to control blood pressure condition. It also works by reducing the nerve impulse to the blood vessels which allows the blood to pass more easily through them thereby pressure levels. However, it must be noted this class of medicine isn’t the primary way to treat high blood pressure.

Another medication available for treating high blood pressure is alpha beta blockers. This medication is very similar to alpha blockers in its working. This category of medicine not only of this drugs helps to distend the veins and so guarantees the blood flows simply thru the heart beat slows down, the blood up in lowering of vessels easily. blood This automatically reduces the blood pressure.

Yet another popular category of medicines used to treat hypertension is Calcium Chanel Blockers. This category of medicine prevents the calcium from entering blood vessels as well as muscle cells of the heart. Since the calcium is unable to enter the arteries, they are more relaxed. This causes the blood pressure levels to go down.

Nervous system inhibitors are the following less popularly used category of blood pressure lowering drugs. They dilate the blood vessels and let the blood flow through smoothly. As a result of it, the blood pressure levels decrease.

All the above debated medication types are prescribed drugs and must be taken under the surveillance of a health care provider. So, go ahead and use these drugs to fight the issue successfully.

There are several varieties and types of home blood pressure monitors (HBPM). Purchasing a blood pressure monitor is a good way to keep track of your blood pressure; then again, selecting one can be confusing. The selection is individual and commonly based on::Accuracy, Ease of use, Price, Type of cuff, Memory and printing options. It is essential to pick one you are happy with. This article will offer you a few tips and information to choose best BP monitor for you.

Home blood pressure machines are principally of 3 types, Mercury column, aneroid and Digital Blood pressure monitors.

Mercury HBPMs:
These are seen in Doctor’s Offices. They are the most exact, yet most tricky to use. This unit utilizes a stethoscope to listen to the sounds in the arteries.

Aneroid HPBMs-
These blood pressure machines are the next most dependable. Aneroid monitors range in price from roughly $20 to $30. They also call for incorporating a stethoscope – which is included in this particular model. They are lightweight, portable, and affordable. Experts from the American Society of Hypertension recommend this type and reveal that these are the most economical monitors and not much can go wrong with them. Aneroid models can be complicated to use, and may possibly call for education by a doctor or health employee. Also, using these requires excellent hearing and eyesight and might not be the most excellent alternative for elderly or disabled persons For these reasons, aneroid HBPMs are normally less accepted than digital monitors.

Digital HBPMs:
These monitors are less accurate, but they are the easiest to use. They are a nice choice for people who are hard of hearing or have poor eyesight. If you use it properly, it is the best option for anyone.

Furthermore it is necessary to consider the style of cuff when buying HBPMs. Cuffs are of three types. Arm, wrist and finger cuffs. Arm cuffs are the most exact. Finger and wrist cuffs are only suggested for those who cannot wear them on the arm. An improperly fitted arm cuff will provide an inaccurate reading. This is the most frequent reason for erroneous blood pressure readings. To find out your cuff size, measure around the middle of your upper arm. If it is
Less than 31 cm (12.2 in), buy a regular-size cuff.
Between 31 and 40 cm (15.7 in), buy a large-size cuff.

Cuffs need to be inflated to measure blood pressure- they include those that must be inflated manually, semi-automatic devices, or auto inflate devices.

Next are some pointers for when you buy your blood pressure monitor.

Display Size – Is a standard or an extra-large LCD read-out needed? Try to get one with a normal size.
Power Supply – Battery powered or AC adapter. If you travel, the battery powered unit is your most excellent choice.
Memory Features – Several models remember the most recent reading or many readings. There are also models that include a PC link. Better to select one that has a recall of a minimum of one month Blood Pressure monitoring.
Printing options- Several monitors also include printing options to keep your records safe.
Cuff Sizes – Large and small arm cuffs are available for several units. The size of the cuff on a blood pressure monitor may possibly be the most important issue in getting a precise reading. So each time use a cuff which is not too small and not too large.
Cost – Price might be the most important factor. Remember to do as much research as possible. The more costly models might not always be better than the inexpensive machines
Accuracy – Readings on some wrist and finger units may not be as accurate as an arm unit depending on the person.
Ease of Use – Depends on personal preference. People with certain disabilities might come across one unit simpler to manage than another.
Length of Warranty – Warranties fluctuate from one to three years. Test your machine frequently to make sure everything runs efficiently and accurately.

While monitoring your blood pressure is important, reducing it is more important. If you are overweight, learning how to get rid of body fat and losing excess weight can be a literal life saver.

There is now little doubt about the health benefits of Omega3 oils. These have been well publicised recently and more and more people are becoming aware that the vast majority of us are deficient in our Omega3 fatty acid intake. Of course these essential fatty acids are found in fish oil which comes from fish, but how do we increase our intake of omega 3 when fish is contaminated with Mercury?

A recent study published this year has examined the levels of Mercury contamination in fish and in the north Pacific Ocean. According to the results of the study the levels of Mercury in the North Pacific has increased 30 percent from 1996 to 2006.

Not only that but it also concluded that around 40 percent of all Mercury exposure of people in the US came from tuna consumption from tuna caught in the Pacific.

This is seriously worrying, because you do not want to be eating too much Mercury. It is a neurotoxin and it has serious health implications for adults, but in particular for the fetus and for infants.

It was found that Mercury made its way into the oceans because of atmospheric Mercury production as well as Mercury leakage from Asia. It was present in the oceans as methylmercury, and works its way up the food chain to the fish at the top of the food chain, commonly shark and tuna. And shark and tuna make up a large percentage of our fish intake.

This creates a dilemma for people who recognise our inadequate levels of Omega3 intake in our diets and you wish to increase their intake of fish to increase their intake of omega3 oils. By eating more fish, whilst increasing your intake of essential fatty acids, you also increasing your exposure to Mercury.

Fish is expensive and is also a declining resource. Is there a better way of increasing your intake of essential fatty acids other than eating expensive fish? Yes there is.

Much more cost-effective than eating fish and also safer is to increase your Omega3 intake levels by daily supplementation with omega3 supplements. These are much more cost-effective than buying fish and the very best fish oil supplements are free of Mercury contamination and are safe to be taken daily. As a result of these fats the sales of fish oil supplements are increasing faster than any other nutritional supplement in history.

However if you like eating fish, you recognize the expense involved from eating fish and that you may be increasing your Mercury levels then eating fish is a good way to increase your intake of Omega3 fats. But if you don’t like fish, if you don’t want to undertake the extra expense of buying fish and you prefer not to take more Mercury in your diet then there is a much more cost effective and safer alternative, namely fish oil supplements.

It is however worth noting that there wide variations in the quality of the various supplements available, and that the best fish oil supplements contain almost 3 times as much Omega3 fats as average capsules.

To find a comparison of the different fish oil capsules available visit my website.

Perhaps you’re already aware of the health benefits of essential fatty acids, and in particular Omega 3 fatty acids. There’s been plenty of news lately about these health benefits and many people now understand about the importance of maintaining an adequate intake of Omega3 fats, in which most of us are deficient. But have you heard about Omega 6 fats, and do you know what the Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio is?

We all need good fats known as essential fatty acids for good health. Our body cannot manufacture these itself and so relies on getting them through our diet every day. Omega 3 fats are found in fish, and the vast majority of us are deficient in Omega 3 intake.

However Omega 6 fatty acids are generally found in a range of plant-based food sources that we are not deficient in in our diet. You find Omega 6 fats in sunflower oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, corn oil and more, and soy oil is almost totally comprised of Omega 6 fatty acids.

Generally these vegetable oils are extremely cheap. Because they are cheap they are used in almost all processed foods requiring oil, including margarine. Most of us eat a diet high in processed foods and cook with vegetable oils and as a result our diets are too high in Omega 6.

Scientific research has shown that in the past we had an Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio of roughly 1 to 1, or in other words we ate roughly the same amount of each of these fats in our diet. However estimates now are that the Omega3 Omega 6 ratio in the average US citizen is somewhere from 10 to 1, or even, according to some estimates up to 30 to 1. Because of our reliance on vegetable oils and processed foods we are now eating far more Omega 6 fats than we ever did in the past.

It is true that Omega 6 fats are important to our health however it is also true that the Omega3 Omega 6 ratio, or the ratio between how much of each of the 2 types of fats that we eat, is also very important, and that by eating too much Omega 6, whilst at the same time eating too little Omega 3, we are running the risk of a range of health problems including the possibility of a range of cancers as well as coronary artery disease and inflammatory diseases like arthritis.

Combine this with the fact that in the past most of our meat came from animals which were grass fed, and which therefore had a reasonable level of Omega3 fats, but most of our animals are now grain fed which reduces the levels of omega3 fats and increases the level of Omega 6 and you can see that there is no need at all for supplementation with 6.

So whilst it is important to get enough Omega3 fats in our diet is also vitally important to reduce our reliance on foods high in Omega 6 fats. This produces a much more healthy omega 3 Omega 6 ratio. For all these reasons we need to reduce our reliance on foods high in Omega 6. We can do this by changing our diet to a lower intake of processed foods and by changing our cooking oils from vegetable oils to healthy oils such as olive oil. And equally important is to increase our intake of Omega 3 and the single best way to do this is to take daily fish oil supplements.

However, although all of us should be taking daily fish oil supplements, you need to be aware that there are wide variations in the amount of the Omega 3 fatty acids found in the different brands of fish oil supplements, and you need to know how to make an informed choice when choosing your fish oil supplements.

Find out how to make this comparison between the different fish oil supplement brands on my website.

Since your heart health is so important to your overall health, many start with monitoring the heart and vessel systems.

Patients often depended on their physicians, in the past, to manage their health for them without any input.Consumers are taking a greater role in their own health, especially in the last ten years.

Your overall health is important and one vital component to that is your heart health. However, with the use of some simple blood tests, you can monitor and hopefully decrease your cardiac risks.

Cholesterol Test – This test, often called a lipid panel, is a group of tests to measure the amount of various blood fats that you have. Included in this test are measurements of your total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol). As one of the most commonly performed tests, cholesterol levels can be monitored and managed with it.

VAP Test – A more specific test is called the VAP test.It provides a much more detailed analysis of your cholesterol. New research has shown that the smaller particles of cholesterol determine your risk level to a much greater degree.Heart risk can be assessed by the VAP test since it evaluates smaller particles of cholesterol.

C Reactive Protein – Also called the CRP test, this blood test evaluates the amount of inflammation within your body. Those with high levels of vascular inflammation are at higher risk of developing heart and vascular disease.

Hemoglobin a1c – The a1c test is a simple blood test that measures your blood glucose over a 2-3 month time frame. In comparison with a blood glucose test, the a1c test demonstrates the average of your blood sugar levels over time. Those with higher blood glucose (sugar) levels are more at risk for pre diabetes and diabetes.

This is some simple blood work that can be used by you to monitor your heart health. As always, it is important to work with your physician if these levels are abnormal. You can manage your heart health with knowledge and follow up.

Many of my readers often comment on how much I seem to enjoy blood pressure monitor reviews. After years in the medical product review profession, I know first-hand the dangers of not taking care of your health HCL (Health Care Laziness), as I like to call it, is all too common and it can literally rob you of years from your life.

Many older people depend on blood pressure monitors to maintain good cardiovascular health. So, I don’t write these articles out of the pleasure I receive from them; I write them because I feel the information is relevant and important. In fact, I honestly believe that no home should be without a blood pressure monitor.

Well enough of the sermon, we are here to review the Lifesource UA-853AC Premium Stand-Up Blood Pressure Monitor. Being on the road a lot myself, I really appreciate the portable type blood pressure monitors. However, I must admit that the best of those cannot compete with the accuracy or reporting features, of a unit like the UA-853AC. The Lifesource UA-853AC leaves nothing lacking, when comes to available features in a home monitor.

Well built and well designed, the accuracy of the Lifesource UA-853AC is second to none. While not so cheap as some home monitors you will find; it is less expensive than some other less capable BP monitors. For the plethora of features that the unit offers, this unit should be considered a good value.

Most important of the units many features is the invaluable Irregular Heartbeat Detection technology, found in this Lifesource monitor. IHD allows a user to know when irregularities occur that could be signs of arrhythmia issues. Irregular heartbeat conditions detected by the monitor can then be discussed with a physician and further diagnosed. I cannot begin to tell how very important this feature could prove for many people who suffer arrhythmia conditions. Having already been around a few years, the technology has proven effective in saving lives. Detecting arrhythmia issues early can help a patient stave off a potential heart attack or stroke.

The Lifesource UA-853AC knows the difference between morning and evening blood pressure readings. The Lifesource monitor can also tell you the averages for both morning and evening readings. Armed with this helpful information, a doctor can better evaluate medicine dosage levels. If you take medication for hypertension, then you know that morning and evening dosages will often times vary. When it’s time for your next doctor’s appointment, your doctor will be pleased with these reports.

The Lifesource UA-853AC also has the ability to ring an alarm at 3 different times to remind you to take your medication (a nice touch for the slightly absentminded) In addition, the monitor also provides for logging of your last ninety blood pressure readings. Your doctor will also really like the logging feature, because the log helps him to gauge the effectiveness of your medication. The monitor has a very large LCD Display, which means the results are easy to read, even at a distance.

The unit is of solid construction and very durable in its design. Lifesource offers a full lifetime warranty on its BP monitors.

On the whole, the Lifesource Monitor UA-853AC is a premium quality Blood Pressure Monitor that gives you everything you would expect and more. Because of the size of the monitor, you probably won’t find it very suitable for quick trips; however, it will fit easily in large bags or suitcases.

This Lifesource Monitor is a solidly built Blood Pressure Monitor that will give you very accurate results for years, with reasonable care and use. The UA-853AC monitor is a very good value for the money. This workhorse performs.

Sales of fish oil pills are growing faster than sales of any other nutritional supplement in history. Lets look at why fish oil pills, sometimes called omega 3 pills or omega 3 supplements, are selling so fast and why you should be taking them as well.

Fish oil contains 2 essential fatty acids called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and these are good fats. You may have heard that fat in your diet is bad for you but that is not necessarily true. Some fat in your diet is good for you.

There are some bad fats, in particular saturated fat which is primarily found in animal products such as red meat and chicken. However there are also good fats which are extremely important to your health. The omega 3 fatty acids called essential fatty acids are extremely important to your health and are not manufactured in your body. Therefore the only way you can get Omega 3 fatty acids into you is by taking oil fish pills, or eating a lot of fish.

It is common knowledge, confirmed by studies, that US citizens eat way too little fish and therefore their intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids is inadequate. There are studies which have shown that citizens in countries where fish is on the menu almost daily have much better health and in particular much better heart health then we do and that this is a result of their higher intake of fish and seafood products.

There’s a wide range of health benefits from increasing your intake of essential fatty acids. These health benefits include improvments in heart health and these are now recognized by the American Heart Association which recommends minimum intakes of DHA and EPA for each of us every week. They suggest eating more fish or else taking Omega 3 capsules.

The heart health benefits of Omega3 fats include a reduced risk of death. This is a result of better heart health, lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and less plaque in our arteries. And it doesn’t stop there. Higher intakes of Omega3 fats improve brain function and memory, reduce the incidence and effects of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and reduce the risks of blindness by macular degeneration in older age, and more.

There is also ample evidence that pregnant women should be taking Omega 3 supplements because DHA and EPA, and in particular DHA, is an essential part of brain development and that if pregnant women are DHA deficient this can negatively affect the brain development of the fetus. Equally it is important for breastfeeding women to supplement with DHA and EPA because these become available to the infant through the breastmilk, and are important to the infant for the same reason. Studies show that children with an adequate supply of Omega3 fats through their developmental years do better on IQ tests.

Clearly we need to add more DHA and EPA to our diet but how do we do that? We can eat more fish but fish is very expensive and only certain fish have high levels of omega 3. When combined with the fact that fish is high in mercury and that the FDA tell us not to eat too much for this reason then eating more fish isn’t looking so attractive. But taking daily fish oil pills is.

Omega 3 pills offer the ideal answer. These are small capsules of fish oil which are simple to take everyday, and although children may struggle taking them it is a simple matter to cut the top off and poor the oil onto their food. The very best fish oil pills are free of contamination and are extremely cost-effective to take daily.

However the best fish oil pills contain far more DHA, the most important Omega 3 fat, than the worst and for this reason it is difficult to compare the different omega 3 supplements available.

For some time I have been giving fish oil pills to my family and taking them myself with my breakfast. I buy the fish oil pills that I consider to be the worlds best. To find out which Omega 3 supplements I consider to be the best visit my website.

It is critical that you maintain optimum cholesterol levels. A high level of cholesterol increases risks of a coronary attack along with various other health disorders. If you too are working with the problem of high cholesterol, then the following tips will be of great help.

Step 1: Control Fat and Cholesterol intake in your diet
The first Step that you need to take to bring down your cholesterol levels is to reduce your consumption of fat and cholesterol. You need to make more fit food choices. For instance, opt for olive oil and canola oil that are monosaturated rather than saturated fats such as butter.

You should also attempt to desist from food items that have a high cholesterol content such as eggs, margaraine, butter, polyunsaturated oils and the like. Try to go in for a fibre rich diet by including full cereals in your diet.

Step 2: Alter Your Lifestyle
This is meant especially for all couch-potatoes. They have to give in on their practice of eating junk-food and lying around. It is time that they give up such a lifestyle or else it would be too late. Switch from junk-food to sensible food foods loaded in important nutrients and fibre. Also, move off that couch and start doing some exercise. Play something in the field, do some running or cycling. That would help increase your rate of metabolism and let you to quickly burn whatever you eat.

Step 3: Switch to cholesterol lowering medication if lifestyle changes do not help
If lifestyle changes don’t help you lower cholesterol or the level of LDL or triglycerides in your blood stream is too high, you need to look for cholesterol lowering medicines. Cholesterol lowering medications can be split into various categories depending upon which component of cholesterol you need to work on – Cholesterol, LDL cholesterol or Triglycerides.

Medicines such as Statins and Vitamin B [ niacin ] are helpful to lower LDL cholesterol. However, you should not over-consume Vitamin B as it could have significant side-effects. You should adhere to your doc’s recommendation on its intake plan. You should be also be wary of over-consuming other cholesterol-reducing medicines as they can also have side-effects.

Step 4: Increase the Amount of HDL-Cholesterol
This kind of cholesterol helps reduce harmful cholesterol in the body. It is a necessary component for the body and is a. K. A good cholesterol. The correct level of this cholesterol in the body is sixty mg/dL [ 1.55 mmol/L ]. If it falls below this level, the condition is hazardous.

If your HDL Cholesterol level has fallen below the above stated level you can increase it is regarded deadly for the help of foods such as monosaturated oils [ olive oil ], foods rich in Vitamin B, and by limited consumption of alcohol. However, do not over-indulge in consuming Vitamin B. This can cause serious side-effects.

There are clear benefits of increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids, the 2 most important being DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). In particular there are well established heart benefits to taking more Omega 3 in your diet, however for anyone with high triglycerides it is also now clear that increasing your intake of essential fats can help in lowering triglycerides.

Almost all of us eat a diet that is too low in the essential fatty acids known as omega 3 fats. These are found in fish oil and the research has clearly established that by increasing the amount of fish oil in our diet we improve our heart health and also attract a range of other health benefits.

Some of the important heart health benefits from increasing omega 3 in the diet include reducing blood pressure, reducing the growth of plaque in the arteries, reducing the risk of fatal heart attack and now also helping to lower triglyceride levels.

Triglycerides are a form of fat that can be manufactured in the body from the food you eat and exist in the blood. Having high triglycerides increases the risk of blood clots and can also lead to a lowering of your HDL (good) cholesterol. Basically high triglycerides are linked to coronary artery disease. And high triglycerides can also be a risk factor in some other diseases, for example diabetes.

A diet with high levels of saturated fat intake can increase triglyceride levels as can a diet of high sugar foods. Risk factors also include being overweight and drinking too much alcohol.

So for many people lowering triglycerides is very important, and they want to know how to lower triglycerides.

There are a range of things that you can do to lower triglycerides if you have a problem, including reducing the amount of fatty foods and in particular foods was saturated fats, eating less sugar and exercising more. Also important is reducing alcohol intake and try to lose weight if you are overweight.

However research is now showing that increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil is also important in a strategy to lower triglycerides.

For example a statement published on the website of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concludes that “omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil decreased serum triglyceride concentrations by 25% to 30%,” and “A dose-response relationship exists between omega-3 fatty acid intake and triglyceride lowering”.

It is clear that increasing the intake of Omega3 fats has a role in lowering triglycerides and for this reason the American Heart Association recommends minimum levels of DHA and EPA of 2 to 4 grams per day by way of fish oil supplements under the care of a physician for people with high triglycerides.

Many people have a problem with lowering triglycerides and this is good news for them and gives them a way to lower triglycerides naturally.

And there is also powerful evidence of a wide range of other health benefits from increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids, and for these reasons everyone, including people with high triglycerides, should seek to maintain a minimum level of fish oil in the diet.

Of course you can eat more fish but fish is generally contaminated with mercury and can be extremely expensive. The best fish oil supplements are not contaminated and are much more cost-effective to be taken daily, though not all fish oil supplements are as good as others.

Visit my website to find out how to compare the various fish oil supplements available, (and which ones I take myself).
